THINGS TO DO
Carving their own niche in the skyline of Capri, sculpted by the wind and sea, and home to rare plants and wildlife, stand Stella (Star),Faraglione di Mezzo (in between) and Scopolo. These three rocky stacks, rising from the azure Tyrrhenian Sea, are collectively known as the Faraglioni
The Faraglioni rock formations of Capri tower an average of 100 meters above the surface of the sea. The best way to view the Faraglioni, however, is by sea during a boat tour of the island. Your skipper will sail right through the stone archway of the Faraglione di Mezzo: if you're with your sweetheart, be sure to exchange a kiss while passing through for good luck!
- Blue Grotto
Italy’s Blue Grotto and Emerald Grotto are natural sea caves that illuminate seawater with a mystical glow with either bright cerulean blue or deep emerald green hues, respectively. This natural light filtration creates otherworldly tones that look mystical.
Without calm seas and low tides, the grotto becomes inaccessible, as the 1-meter entrance is impossible to pass. To enter the grotto, visitors must lay flat on the bottom of a small 4-person rowboat. The oarsman then uses a metal chain attached to the cave walls to guide the boat inside the grotto.
During Roman times, the grotto was used as the personal swimming hole of Emperor Tiberius as well as a marine temple.
Villa Jovis ("Villa of Jupiter") is a Roman palace built by emperor Tiberius and completed in AD 27. Access to the complex is only possible on foot, and involves an uphill walk of about two kilometers from Capri town. The entire complex, spanning several terraces and a difference in elevation.
Apparently the main motivations for Tiberius's move from Rome to Capri were his wariness of the political maneuvering in Rome and a lingering fear of assassinated .
The Villa Jovis is also, at least according to Suetonius, the place where Tiberius engaged in wild debauchery.
Fiori di Zuccca Fritti
There is not a more delicate, succulent, savory summer treat than the blossoms that arrive with young zucchini.
Zucchini blossoms are considered a delicacy in many part of the world. In Italy there are many different dishes that feature zucchini blossoms, but the best known is fiori di zuccca fritti, or batter-fried zucchini blossoms.
While the blossom is filled with different ingredients in different parts of Italy – ricotta or prosciutto di parma, for example –fiori di zucca fritti alla romana are filled with a single strip of mozzarella, and a thin anchovy
Summers in Italy, when the zucchini harvest is at its peak, there are more zucchini blossoms than one knows what to do with. Locals gently fry them in their kitchens for their children and grandchildren, pizzerie and trattorie offer them as appetizers on their menus. The flower’s mild zucchini flavor and creamy texture, offset by the light and crispy batter-fried exterior, is something you must experience to fully understand.
